Koalra: The Softie Leads a New EP From Portland's Prolific Noise Rockers
Some bands take three years between records. Koalra has made seven albums since 2019. The Portland band, which started as a garage project among friends in Chicago before relocating west, treats recording like a habit, and the habit has produced one of the most stubbornly prolific catalogs in underground rock. Today brings the newest entry: "The Softie," the first single from a five-song EP called Slides, out December 18 on Gigantic Noise Records.
If you are new here, five songs will map the whole thing faster than any bio.
1. "The Softie" (2026). Start here. It is track one of Slides, 3:24, and it is out today. The lyrics are printed on the Bandcamp page, and they are the point: loss and absence, failure and self-doubt, softness and mortality. "You got a mother, I got none left." "Skin is soft and souls don't last, they float and pass." A "Good come back" refrain runs through it. The sound is the band's signature, fuzz-drenched guitars and driving rhythms under a dreamy baritone, grunge and post-punk and shoegaze and krautrock all in the same room.
2. "Dear Daylight." The most played Koalra song on Spotify by a wide margin, over 45,000 plays. If one track explains why people stick around, it is this one.
3. "Disasterclass." The title track of the seventh album, released in December 2023. The record that turned a prolific band into a critically noticed one, with coverage from Post-Punk.com, The Big Takeover, and Rock Era Magazine.
4. "Torture" (2021). An earlier single on Gigantic Noise Records, and the third most played track in the catalog. The template was already set: heavy guitars, hazy vocals, songs that sound bigger than the rooms they were recorded in.
5. "In a Weird Way" (2025). The most recent single before today, released March 1, 2025. It is the bridge between the Disasterclass era and Slides, and the clearest sign that the band keeps sharpening rather than repeating itself.
Press comparisons run from Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth to The Cure and Joy Division, which tells you roughly where the guitars live. But the number that matters is 290: that is Koalra's monthly listener count on Spotify, a band with seven albums and a real press trail that almost nobody has heard yet. That is exactly the kind of band this blog exists for.
