Flower Petal took a While to Bloom But it Was Worth the Wait

Mitch Rocket Band

You never know where you're gonna find cool bands. That's why you just gotta be looking out for em'. We found this one as a reply to a Threads post. For all the Bandcamp enjoyers out there, you probably already know that 'Bandcamp Friday' is a thing. So last Friday, I made a post putting some feelers out there to see who had something new. One of the replies was 'Flower Petal' from Mitch Rocket.

As soon as that chord progression started flowing and the drum breakdown led into the song, I knew I was gonna be feeling this one. Turns out that progression has a long history. Mitch came up with it sometime around 2014, and it stayed instrumental until spring/summer 2022, when a particularly beautiful and peaceful day in the park provided the lyrical spark that was missing. The band first performed it live in the fall of 2022. It almost made it onto the 'Live at the Retro-Future Revue EP', but the band felt like things needed to be tightened up a bit. It finally got its studio version in early June 2026, and it was released on August 6, 2026. Sometimes good things just take time and this is a prime example of that.

On their website, they describe 'Flower Petal' as a smooth, groovy yacht rock tune about "letting go of the pressure built up from all life's shoulds". That's how it made me feel, so I can concur.

Mitch calls 'Flower Petal' a companion piece to 'Blue Sky', and that checks out. Both sit on the softer, gentler side of the band's yacht grunge sound, with jazzy A and B sections that open up into psychedelic bridges, and both are about the beauty of nature and its power to free our minds from the digital prisons of the modern world. 'Blue Sky' was written in June 2022 and recorded live at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell during the first Retro-Future Revue concert on May 25, 2024, so if 'Flower Petal' lands for you, that is the next one to play.

The band itself is worth knowing. Mitch Rocket is a sax-forward indie rock band from San Francisco, built around a style they call "Yacht Grunge": the jazz chords of Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder mixed with the overdriven angst of Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden. What started as a solo bedroom project has grown into a full band electrifying Bay Area audiences since 2021, with a setlist that ranges from folk rock to ska to free jazz. Their debut album Petting Zoo premiered at Bottom of the Hill in late 2021, the July 2023 single 'Worry Less' became their most-streamed song, and their April 2025 EP Live at the Retro-Future Revue was recorded at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell.

On 'Flower Petal' the lineup is Mitch Rocket (vocals, rhythm guitar), Alan Onymous (drums), Milky Mike Flynn (bass), Jazzy Geoff McConohy (keyboards, alto sax), Sarah Parker (violin), and Tucker Owen (lead guitar). Parker and Owen are the newer members, and their violin and lead guitar are all over this track.

I checked through a few of their other songs and it's all stuff that you can pretty much just put on and chill to without worrying about a skip button. One more recommendation I'd give though is 'Blue Sky', which is a similar vibe but on a bit more moody tip. Especially since it ties into Flower Petal.
