Some albums tell you exactly what they are in the first four minutes. "Thundermonkey" opens Beats From A Neurodivergent Brain, the August 2026 album from Australian producer CommsBreakdown, and it lays out the whole record in one track: old-school filtered drums, DJ-friendly beats, a dropout that leaves gated guitar and pads hanging in the air, then analogue-style synths and deep, deep bass.

CommsBreakdown is Steve Ash, a British-born producer now based in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, where he records from a home studio. His Bandcamp bio notes an earlier life as a producer and remixer with Black Dog Productions, and in an interview with Songcards he traces the habit back to a first Casio keyboard in the 1980s and watching Depeche Mode on Top of the Pops. After moving to Australia, he returned to releasing music in 2024 under the CommsBreakdown name, starting with the solo album Ultra Communication. The Bandcamp catalog now runs to 30 releases.

Every track on Beats From A Neurodivergent Brain is written, performed, recorded and produced by Ash alone. The title is literal. In his album notes, Ash writes that he was late-diagnosed as AuDHD in 2025, and that the diagnosis helped him understand how he makes music: the hyperfocus, the love of repetition and pattern, the need for structure and for new sounds. He calls the record a collection of electronic doodles with one eye on the dancefloor and the other on the beauty of repeating rhythms.

Across its 10 tracks the album moves between techno, IDM, drum and bass, electro and ambient techno, while the wider CommsBreakdown sound folds in downtempo, synthwave, post-rock and chillout. It is dance music built by a pattern lover, which is why the grooves feel both meticulous and loose at the same time.

Start here

  • "Thundermonkey" (album opener): filtered drums and gated guitar over deep bass. The mission statement for the whole record.
  • "I Heart Techno": built from sounds sampled out of a kids' toy DJ mixer, filled out with 909 drums and 303 acid lines.
  • "Bong Bong Common" (from Dadtronica Eclectica, 2025): kookaburra calls recorded near his home, riding over the beats. The Southern Highlands, sampled.
