BELLADONNA: Tokyo Witch Pop With an Operatic Streak on Her Debut Single

Some debut singles play it safe. BELLADONNA does the opposite. The Tokyo solo artist released her self titled debut single, "Belladonna," on October 25, 2026 through DOLLCORE Records, and it is built like a small opera that wandered into a pop song. It is also, so far, her entire catalog. One song, one video, and a fully formed world to walk into.

A name with a history

BELLADONNA took her project name from Belladonna of Sadness, the 1973 Japanese animated film that has become a cult touchstone for dark, beautiful, and unsettling imagery. That reference tells you a lot about the project before you hear a note. Her own framing, in the Spotify bio and across her socials, is a Tokyo urban fairytale with a modern day witch at the center of it. The single's video leans all the way in. She directed the visual world herself, the credits list Alison Jones as director, and Swedish artist Endigo produced the video. The full lyrics are posted beneath it, so the fairytale is there to read as well as watch.

What it sounds like

"Belladonna" pairs classically trained operatic soprano vocals with a neoclassical arrangement. Side-Line describes the mix well, 1970s Americana set against 18th century classical opera, and she describes her own sound as sitting at the dark end of pop. The hashtag she uses, #WitchPop, is the simplest version of it. The lyric is a transformation story told in first person. Lines like "From my scars, I bloom in the dark" and "I am your Belladonna" turn the poisonous plant of the name into a figure who survives, casts the spell, and sets the terms. At 3:05 the track stays tight, so the drama comes from the voice and the arrangement rather than from length. If you like pop that treats atmosphere as the main event, this is squarely in your lane.

Start here

Start with "Belladonna" itself, and watch the video rather than streaming it in the background. The visuals, the lyrics, and the vocal performance are one piece, and the video is where the project explains itself fastest. With no other releases yet and no live dates announced that we could find, this single is both the introduction and the whole story so far. That will not stay true for long if the debut is anything to go by.
