Objects in Motion Turn Childhood Into Dream Pop on River Road

There is a specific kind of drive most of us know by heart. The streets of the town you grew up in, or the one your family came from, rolling past the window while a song you love plays low. That is the video for "River Road", the new single from Boston dream pop band Objects in Motion: the band cruising the streets of Milton, Massachusetts, while Vinda Souza sings about the place that made her.

The song is about childhood, and the band says so plainly. In their words, it is an homage to loving parental and familial relationships, to growing up abroad, to having a sense of connection to faraway places. It is, they say, a celebration of formative years and a letter of gratitude to the people who shaped them. It is hard to argue with that framing once you hear the track. "River Road" runs just 2:19, and it moves like a memory does: warm, a little hazy, gone before you are ready for it to end. The lyrics keep coming back to trusted memories and the past waiting to receive us, a rearview mirror showing what we need.

Objects in Motion are a Boston four-piece: Souza on vocals, michael lantow on guitar, Dan Angolano on bass, and Ola Awolesi on drums. Their stated aim is to reinterpret early 90s shoegaze into something darker, lusher, and reflective of modern chaos, and the debut EP that "River Road" leads, inside outside upside downside, released over the summer, makes good on that. The opener "Incandescent" is the bright spark, "Allston Christmas Ham" leans into the psych edge, and "Don't Look Down" closes the set in a dreamy haze. "River Road" is the outlier, the sweetest and most direct song on the record, and it works as the front door.

The track was produced, mixed, and mastered by Brad Krieger at Big Nice Studio in Lincoln, Rhode Island, and the video, produced by Angolano and filmed by the band, arrived October 27. If you are in the Boston area, the band play the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge on November 19.
