Reiyo The Giant: Haunting Soul for the Trick of the Night
Some songs try to scare you. Reiyo The Giant does something quieter and harder to shake. On "Trick of the Night," the Bronx-born, Atlanta-based singer-songwriter sings like she is thinking aloud, and the fear in the song is not a monster in the hallway. It is the moment you stop trusting your own instincts.
That unease is the foundation of her debut album, Trick of the Night, out November 6, 2026 via Safari Riot. Reiyo imagines the record as a walk through a familiar house where something always seems slightly amiss. Each song occupies a different room, and the surroundings stay recognizable even as grief, fear, and rumination distort them. It is a fitting image for an album about how the mind can turn an ordinary place strange.
Reiyo has been building toward this record for years. Her self-produced 2021 debut EP, Romeo, explored romance through an obsessive, emotionally unreachable figure. Since then she has widened her sound through collaborations, including "CARMEN" with Airmow and "You Saw Me" with breathe., and her work has drawn support from Spotify's New Music Friday and Fresh Finds playlists and Apple Music's New Music Daily.
What she sounds like is harder to pin down, which is part of the appeal. The title track pairs sparse piano and electronic textures with an intimate, conversational vocal that grows more urgent as it unfolds. Produced by Anwar Sawyer and written with Yorie Oppong, it blends haunting soul with ambient and electronic elements. For reference points, start with the lineage she cites herself: Nina Simone and Erykah Badu for tone and directness, and James Blake for a voice dissolving into electronic atmosphere without losing its human center.
Listen
"Trick of the Night" is the sixth single from the album, following "Can't Call Me," "Get It Together," "The Show Must Go On," "How To Get Nowhere Fast," and "Nu World." It is the right entry point, because it states the album's central question plainly. As Reiyo puts it: "I couldn't decide what was intuition and what was fear. The lines became so blurred that eventually I was believing everything."
Reiyo also recently signed a publishing deal with Cutcraft Music Group, announced October 20, 2026, a timely vote of confidence just ahead of the album's release.
