Dani Offline: LA's New Soul Voice Makes Her Ronnie Scott's Debut
Some records ask to be danced to. Others ask to be sat with, phone off, lights low. Dani Offline's debut album, Lover's Discourse, is firmly the second kind, and it is the record that has carried her from Los Angeles rooms to a UK headline debut at Upstairs at Ronnie Scott's on November 7.
Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Dani came to the Bay Area for graduate studies in comparative literature at UC Berkeley, and she is now based in Los Angeles. She is a songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, trained in jazz vocal improvisation, and she writes about music, literature, and culture on her Substack alongside a PhD in comparative literature. That double life, scholar and singer, runs through everything she makes.
Lover's Discourse is a 12 track, largely analog and sample free album released in September 2026 via Eulipion Arts. Its title borrows from Roland Barthes' A Lover's Discourse: Fragments, and each song works like a small thesis on love, tender, contradictory, and unsentimental by turns. The sound draws on 1970s soul and the late night Quiet Storm radio she grew up hearing, warm grooves, jazz phrasing, and vocals she has described as delicate and ethereal, like a floating angel or a ghost. She taught herself to sing listening to Sarah Vaughan and Minnie Riperton, and you can hear that lineage in the way her voice floats over the band rather than pushing through it.
If you like the introspective soul of Solange, the cool poise of Sade, or the jazz inflected R&B of Madison McFerrin, Dani Offline will feel familiar and still entirely her own. The album opens with "tell me," which folds in a 1983 recording of her grandmother at a poetry reading in Oakland, and closes with "juno," which she has called one of the record's most honest and vulnerable songs.
On stage, Dani moves between intimate solo settings and a full band, pairing rich musicianship with ethereal vocal improvisation. She has shared stages with Madison McFerrin, Braxton Cook, and Kiefer, played Noise Pop at SFJAZZ, and just brought the Lover's Discourse Live tour home to a sold out Gold-Diggers show in Los Angeles on October 27. Next stop: her first ever UK headline show, Upstairs at Ronnie Scott's in London on November 7, celebrating the album's release.
